Nutritionists work in a variety of venues, like hospitals, schools and fitness centers. Their main focus is to ensure proper nutrition for people who may need to lose weight or just get into a healthier lifestyle. While a Bachelors degree is generally required, the major you choose can be in the form of food service systems management, food nutrition or dietetics. In any case, the course of study and school that you choose to pursue must meet all the requirements handed down by the American Dietetic Association Commission.

Various schools offer courses for a nutritionist degree both online and in person, the choice stands where you are at and how much time you can devote to schooling. If you work full-time and must earn your degree when you are off work, you may want to consider an online school, whereas if you are going to school and devoting all of your time to your schooling, an on campus course of study may suite you best. Once again, the choice is yours, just be sure the school follows the required curriculum.

Classes that you need to take in order to earn your nutritionist degree should include advanced and community nutrition, nutrition counseling, food service nutrition and medical nutrition. While all of these courses are nutrition based, they are all very different, for instance, advanced nutrition will help guide you to the nutrition of everybody, while medical nutrition will focus more on the nutrition of those who have medical problems like diabetes who require a special type of diet. Nutrition counseling will help you as a nutritionist to get people into a healthier lifestyle, so you can counsel them on how to eat better to get healthier. In addition to the nutrition courses, you will still need to complete the basic general education prerequisites required for all Bachelor degrees, such as math, science and English, as well as more scientific courses like biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, microbiology and any other class your school requires for your nutritionist degree.

Becoming a dietitian is just as complex as pursuing any other career that requires a degree. While each state has its own governing certifications that you must follow to become a dietitian, most require not only a college degree but also some form of work related training, or on the job training before you become certified. The best way to earn work experience is to gain an internship at an establishment like a school, hospital or nursing home, depending on what your ultimate goal is. For example, if you want to get into geriatric nutrition, a nursing home would be the place to start, at the same time, if you want to work with schools to promote proper nutrition to children, then go for an internship at a school. In any case, go with the internship that will get you closest to where you want to be once you have your degree and are ready to go to work.

A Bachelors degree may be just the beginning of your schooling toward your nutritionist degree. Once you have earned your Bachelors, you can also pursue a Masters degree in nutrition as well. Once again, this can be achieved either online or in person and it gives you more experience toward your job as a nutritionist. A Master’s degree will also give you the upper hand when the job search begins, by giving you more education and more experience, resulting in more job offers with higher wages.
